Mugen CR-Z powertrain details come to light

22 Apr

The Honda CR-Z is an interesting little hybrid that has mostly disappointed us with a dire need for more power if it ever hopes to live up to its promise as a sports coupe. The tuners at Mugen have promised to change all that with a souped-up version of the unique little hatch, and CAR reports the result is a 50-percent power increase via forced injection.

The British mag says the Mugen Euro will feature a supercharger mated to the standard 1.5-liter four-cylinder, which bumps the power output to 197 horsepower and 181 pound-feet of torque. That’s a far cry from the stock 113 ponies and 107 lb-ft, yet the engineers at Mugen reportedly managed to find a way sync Honda’s integrated hybrid assist system. That should make for a fairly efficient little screamer, and Mugen is reportedly hoping induction and exhaust upgrades will help its hot hatch improve upon the CRZ’s 38 miles per gallon. Not if you’re using all 197 of those ponies on a regular basis.

New York 2011: Honda brings entire 2012 Civic family to New York

22 Apr

Honda brought the whole family of 2012 Civics to the party at this year’s New York Auto Show. We’ve gotten to feast our eyes on the coupe, sedan, Si, hybrid and natural gas-drinking GX. That’s a lot of new sheetmetal to look at, so we decided to pack them all in one post to make it easy on you.

The 2012 Civic coupe, sedan and GX are all powered by a 1.8-liter inline four-cylinder engine that produces 140 horsepower. In uber-efficient HF guise, the same engines is capable of returning 41 miles per gallon fuel economy on the highway. The standard coupe and sedan are nearly as frugal at 39 mpg on the highway. We’ll have a separate report on the new Civic Hybrid soon, but in the meantime know that it will be rated at 44 mpg combined, an improvement of 4 mpg over last year’s model.

The New NSX

4 Feb

Heads up, Hondaphiles – it looks like the NSX has been dug out of storage and plopped back on the table as a candidate for production. Company president Takashi Ito has announced that he’s jump-starting development on the supercar. As you may recall, the beast was unceremoniously put to bed after the global economy gutted itself back in 2008. At the time, the project sailed under the HSV-010 moniker, and Honda even went so far as to campaign a version of the machine in the Japanese Super GT series.

Li Nian

22 Dec

Honda has unleashed a new compact sedan on the Chinese market. Called the Li Nian S1, or Everus for those that speak the king’s English, the new vehicle is geared toward younger buyers. We’re guessing that this little sucker gets its bones from the likes of the Honda City given its proportions and the fact that Honda says that the vehicle is based on existing architecture. Buyers will be able to pick up the Everus with their choice of either a 1.3-liter or a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine when the pint-sized sedan goes on sale in spring 2011.
